Does hydrochlorothiaz cause gout?

Hi - I'm a doctor. Thiazide diuretics like Hydrochlorothiazide can predispose to gout usually in doses of 25 mg per day or higher. They can also precipitate attacks in people known to have gout when started. Am afraid the other commentator has given incorrect advice. If you are taking this medication and believe you have gout or are at risk for gout speak to your physician about taking a different drug for blood pressure (there are many choices - thiazides are often first choice as they are cheaper.)
