Gout question... help, father is in pain.?

my father gets occasional gout attacks . . . he is currently not working due to the swollen ankle he has. he is a truck driver, cannot drive well due to his foot. the doc just gives him anti inflammatory drugs, no pain medicine. i was just wondering if anyone knew of a pain reducer, or a way to get rid of the uric crystals. he is a very active person, if he is not working, he is constructing something. i feel bad seeing him like that. if anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it bunches. thanx ^_^
